Cyber Monday Deals: Leaked

November 25, 2009

We’ve all heard about Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving and the busiest shopping day of the year — when retailers hope to sail cleanly out of the red and into the black.  But getting up early on Friday morning and braving the crowds for those “door-buster deals” is not for everyone.

Cyber Monday vs. Black Friday

Enter Cyber Monday, the online equivalent of Black Friday, where desktop shoppers can take advantage of more discounts on the Monday after Thanksgiving.  Invented in 2005 by Shop.org, a division of the National Retail Federation, Cyber Monday was probably meant to lure office workers on conference calls to add shopping to their multi-tasking options. (To read a funny article on the phenomenon, see this Boston Globe article by Nancy Shohet West.)

Sneak-Peek Deals and Discounts on Unique Gifts

Whether shopping is a guilty pleasure or a chore on your to-do list, most of us will be buying a few presents this year.  I dug up some unpublished Cyber Monday deals and exclusive discount codes for an article at Buttoned Up, a very useful Website about organizing your life without killing yourself in the process.

The Buttoned Up article features special sales on unique, hard-to-find and eco-friendly gifts.  I hope you’ll find something that saves you money and pleases a loved one.

In the meantime, I’m wishing you a Thanksgiving stuffed with good food and good friends and family.

Thanks for linking to my essay about conference calls, Amy! The satirical side not withstanding, I love the idea of cyber Monday because I think it’s funny that everyone THINKS about shopping all weekend and then actually DOES it once they’re back at work when they should be working. Now that I’m self-employed, I don’t waste nearly so much of my work day on things like online shopping. :-) I havne’t really made a holiday shopping strategy yet for this year…but maybe I’ll find myself thinking about it once Cyber Monday arrives. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Amy, I’m completely freaked out by competing with the Black Friday madness, and yet I find myself yearning for those sales!! Thanks so much for those helpful links, and like Nancy said, I most definitely will be doing my shopping from work (sad but true!) Thanks again!
