How to Wash Your Clothes on Vacation

Unfortunately I now know a lot about this topic. While I would take a coin-op laundromat any day, that wasn’t possible on our recent trip to Italy, so I saved even more money by washing our clothes the old-fashioned way.

I have some tips on how exactly to hand-wash your clothes while traveling at Parentables, as well as some handy travel laundry products you can pack to make the experience as quick as possible.

Even though scrubbing shorts with shampoo in the sink didn’t figure into my image of our trip, the upside was that I didn’t have to deal with the post-vacation laundry pile-up.

  Over here we always hang washing out from spring to autumn, I know that many of my American friends use their dryers, even in the summer. When hanging out clothes always hang tops from their bottoms and bottoms from their tops. This ensures that water doesn’t accumulate in the thicker parts of trousers, for example, and so the clothes dry quicker.
  Once clothes are dry, if you don’t have an iron, just hang them in the bathroom whilst you take a shower, the steam from the shower will decrease the clothes :-)

    Hi Katy,

    So great to hear from someone in Europe! I love your tips about hanging tops from bottoms and bottoms from tops.

    When we lived in Italy (for 4 years), we went with the flow and hung our clothes out to dry too. There was a tiny row of lines on a rear balcony of the apartment building that we shared with others on our floor. In the winter, we used a drying rack (and the tops of the heaters!) inside our apartment.

    I think the reason Americans use dryers in summer is because we are not equipped — or used to — hanging out clothes. But of course that is something one could learn to do if she really wanted to save on electricity and reduce her environmental impact.

    I’m thinking this is a good idea for a post. Any interest in helping me write about it?
