What Frugal Mama is About

While I was reading your responses to my little survey, I wasn’t sure I was going to make it through with dry eyes.  What struck me most was:

You get it.

Where I’m headed tomorrow

Judging from the outpouring of responses, you and I are not alone in loving, among other things:

  • simple living
  • old-fashioned standards
  • making instead of buying
  • family over everything else
  • responsible kids, home cooking, uncluttered spaces, and much more

We live in a complex, fast-paced world.  But as you and I know, it is possible to find clarity and peace.  It is possible to create a beautiful life without spending gobs of money.  It is possible to tune out the noise and focus on what’s really important.

Luke and I last year on the farm

So thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, for joining the discussion, for listening and wondering.  I am working on some enriching additions to Frugal Mama, and through the stillness of this summer, I have been thinking about my personal path through life.

For now I just wanted to say that I am so happy that you are with me on this journey.

Guilty as charged. I’ve spent the weekend wondering how I came back from a 9 day vacation and don’t feel recharged or refreshed. I think one of the culprits is that the cabin now got cell phone/smartphone coverage and had a TV with Olympic coverage. It became addicting to watch the Olympics ALL DAY LONG if I wanted. And as I read emails, I got irritated with bad news that I could do nothing about until I returned home, after the vacation. Next year, I will deliberately, somewhat reluctantly but with great self discipline, unplug. I will leave the smartphone in the car to use for phone calls, location checking texts and the occassional weather check. Though I bet it will be hard at first, I bet I come back feeling better than I do this year. Thanks for sharing your story so I don’t feel so alone in mine.

      Dear Michele,

I’m so sorry to hear that your vacation was not the recharging break that you had hoped for. I have certainly had my share of those!

Thanks for sharing your story about how difficult it is to detach ourselves from the hurriedness and constant communication of modern life. You are not alone in any of this. I’ve talked to a lot of people who don’t think they could let go of their electronics, even if they wanted to.

Unplugging does require self-discipline and commitment, but once we see the alternative, it becomes easier to see why it’s worth it.

I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to catch up on these vacation-period comments. I really do appreciate your solidarity and hearing your thoughts.

      Take care,
      Amy
